Our mission is to restore sight to blind patients afflicted with degenerative retinal disorders for which there currently is no cure. We are achieving this through our unique, surgically implantable nanotechnology device.
Our Solution
In degenerative retinal disorders photoreceptor neurons that transduce light into a neural signal die away and lead to loss of sight. Nanovison is developing a completely novel nanotechnology approach to retinal prosthesis: We bundle together arrays of light sensitive optoelectronic nanowires into small sized electrodes that form the core of a neural retinal stimulation system. We then use infrared light to stimulate the nanowires which in turn electrically stimulate the retinal neurons in the inner layers of the retina. This allows us to restore vision to the parts of the retina that have experienced photoreceptor death using light the biological retina is not capable of seeing, without interfering with the function of spared healthy biological retina.
How we electronically and optically control and modulate the output of the nanowires is what sets us apart from our competitors in a fundamentally unique way.
HEALTHY RETINA
In a healthy retina, photoreceptor neurons convert light into a neurochemical signal.
DEGENERATED RETINA
In a degenerated retina, a loss of photoreceptors results in the inability to convert light to a neurochemical signal.
OUR SOLUTION
With our implanted nanowire retinal prosthesis, nanovision converts incident light into electric fields that stimulate inner retinal neurons.
We are on our way to curing one of the leading causes of blindness in the world: degenerative retinal disorders
